Below are historical photos of of the original US 87 (I-10) freeway and the "Downtown Y" interchange.  These photos were compiled from a number of sources, including old newspapers, planning documents, reader contributions, and the personal pictures of a former Highway Department engineer.  Locations are given using the present-day roadway names.  Dates are approximate in most cases.

I-10 at Woodlawn looking northwest
This photo shows where the original US 87 freeway ended.  Just beyond the overpass, you can see the ramp that
curved up to Fredericksburg Rd. via Magnolia St.  You can still see elements of the Magnolia St. curve today.
(See the bottom of this page.)

This pedestrian bridge is still in use today.

As noted above, the arched pedestrian bridge in the background is still in place today!

I-10 at Fredericksburg looking north
By this time, the freeway had long since been extended northward.

I-10 at Fredericksburg looking north
This area is where the double-decked freeway starts today.  The curved wall near the center of the picture
was part of the Magnolia St. curve discussed above.

Ramp meter along I-10, probably at Woodlawn entrance to eastbound I-10
All ramp meters in this area were removed during double-decking of the freeway in the late '80s.

I-10 approaching I-35, looking east
At this time, I-35's predecessor (the US 81 expressway) had not been built, so the expressway simply
curved to the south at what is now the "Downtown Y" interchange downtown.
The small black & white sign to the right of the roadway just ahead simply reads "Expressway" with a right arrow.
Just beyond that is a pedestrian bridge, and just past that is a left hand exit for Santa Rosa Blvd. that
is in the same approximate location as today's left hand exit for Santa Rosa Blvd. from the I-10 access road.

I-10 at the Downtown Y looking west
This photo was taken from the westbound I-10 overpass over the Santa Rosa Blvd. exit mentioned above
and gives a better view of the Santa Rosa exit and the pedestrian bridge that was at this location until the
"Downtown Y" project rebuilt the interchange in the late 1980s.

I-10 at the Downtown Y looking east
This roadway on the left is the previously discussed Santa Rosa exit ramp and the bridge is the overpass
from which the photo above this one was taken

I-10 at the Downtown Y looking west
This photo shows San Pedro Creek, which today is mostly underground at this location.  Today's
"Finesilver Curve" would be at the far right of this photo.  The bridge in the center of the photo is the
same one in the photo above this one.  You can also see the aforementioned pedestrian
bridge just beyond the overpass.

Exit to northbound I-35 from eastbound I-10
This exit was originally the exit for Santa Rosa Blvd. and continued to serve that role as well as
being the exit for northbound I-35, which was accessed via a cloverleaf ramp on the other side of
the underpasses.  This exit is in the same approximate location as today's connector to Santa Rosa under I-35.

The cloverleaf ramp at the lower right was how eastbound I-10 traffic connected to northbound I-35.
