Station
| Below are pictures of an
abandoned Humble Oil gas station that time has obviously
forgotten. This relic is located at 1019 S. Laredo St. between
S. Alamo and Guadalupe St. next to I-10/I-35. Humble Oil,
founded in Humble, Texas, eventually became part of Exxon in the
mid '60s. The US 81 expressway was built around 1950 and
ended right about here, so this station was probably built
around that time to serve traffic from the new expressway.
However, when the freeway was extended northward a few years
later, this location was a little more difficult to access and
probably went out of business in the late '50s or early '60s.
It is barely visible from the freeway and I actually stumbled
upon it while driving around looking for vantage points for
pictures of the freeway. Despite the obvious age of the
building, it seems to have held-up quite well-- they don't build
'em like that anymore! Bexar County tax records show that
the property is currently owned by a commercial real estate
company. |
