Description

Interstate 37 serves San Antonio's southeast side and intersects with US 181, the main link to fast-growing Wilson County.  The freeway provides access to downtown San Antonio, the Alamodome, St. Paul Square, Brooks City-Base, the San Antonio Missions Trail National Park, and the Texas Center for Infectious Disease.  Between downtown and Military, the freeway is fronted mostly by residential areas.  From Military to US 181, most of the frontage is undeveloped.

Construction projects

Fair Ave. to Goliad Rd.: Work started in the Fall of 2007 on a package of improvements including raising the bridges at Pecan Valley, S New Braunfels, and Southcross to meet the 16 foot minimum requirement and reconstructing the main lanes.

At SE Military Dr.: The existing cloverleaf interchange will be removed and replaced with a standard urban diamond interchange.  This is necessary because of rapid growth in the area and the proximity of the Goliad Rd. intersection to the exit ramp from I-37.  The new interchange will provide better spacing between the intersections as well as better traffic control.

Future plans

The MPO has a proposal in its 25-year plan to expand I-37 from four to six lanes from Loop 410 south to the Atascosa County line.

History

Authorized on October 1, 1959.  Named for Lucian Adams, a Medal of Honor recipient.  Was originally named the "Southeast Expressway."

The route was first proposed by 1964.  All of the route south of Florida St. to US 181 was complete by 1969.  The section north of Florida St. and adjacent to the present-day HemisFair Park was paved in early 1968 for use as parking for HemisFair, the 1968 World's Fair.  It was later completed as a freeway north to I-35 by 1971.

Access roads along most of the route south of I-10 were proposed in the late '80s but were never built.

TransGuide went online from Fair to I-35 in 1995.
