Loop 410 Expansion Project

While recent construction has resulted in a substantial drop in traffic, prior to 2003, Loop 410 North was the most heavily traveled roadway in South Texas, carrying around 200,000 vehicles per day along its northern arc.  Most of the corridor is only six lanes, resulting in significant congestion during most of the day.

To improve mobility in the Loop 410 corridor, TxDOT has now started the largest highway expansion program in San Antonio's history, a seven-year, $483 million program to widen Loop 410 to 10 lanes from Culebra to I-35 North.  In addition, new four-level interchanges at I-10 and US 281 are included in this program as are new interchanges at San Pedro and Bandera Rd.

Overview

Not including the 1-10 and US 281 interchanges, there are eight projects to widen the Loop between I-35 and Culebra.  Four projects have now been completed.

The section between Fredericksburg Rd. and Cherry Ridge is included in the Northwest Interchange project.  The section between McCullough and Nacogdoches Rd. is included in the US 281/Loop 410 interchange project.

Status (as of January 2007)

  • Culebra to Ingram: This project is 77% complete.  Projected completion is the 3rd quarter of 2008.

  • Ingram to Callaghan (Bandera Interchange): See the special Bandera/410 Interchange project page.

  • Callaghan to Fredericksburg Rd: Completed in early 2004.

  • I-10/Loop 410 interchange: See the special Northwest Interchange project page.

  • Cherry Ridge to West Ave: Completed in 1997.  Although the pavement width is for 10 lanes, only eight lanes are striped due to the bottleneck at the I-10/Loop 410 interchange, which limits the number of approach lanes from the east, and the existing six-lane bottleneck at Blanco, which limits the number of approach lanes from the west.  When the projects on either side of this section are completed, the additional lane will be striped and opened to traffic.

  • Jackson-Keller to Honeysuckle: Completed in late 2003. See note above about additional lane.

  • Honeysuckle to Blanco Rd: Completed in mid 2004. See note above about additional lane.

  • Blanco Rd to McCullough (San Pedro Interchange): This project is 98% complete.  Projected completion is the 2nd quarter of 2008.

  • US 281/Loop 410 interchange: See the special US 281/Loop 410 interchange project page.

  • Nacogdoches to Austin Hwy: This project is 29% complete.  Projected completion is the 2nd quarter of 2010.

Current long-term closures

  • Loop 410 westbound exit to Evers: Relocated to Summit Pkwy. exit.

  • I-10/Loop 410 interchange: See the special Northwest Interchange project page.

  • Loop 410 eastbound exit to Jones-Maltsberger: Permanently closed; use San Pedro exit instead.

  • Loop 410 westbound entrance from Broadway: Closed until late February.

  • Loop 410 eastbound exit to Wetmore/Broadway: Closed until March; use Airport Blvd. exit instead.

Project history

A Major Investment Study (MIS) of the Loop 410 corridor from I-35 North to Culebra conducted in 1996 for the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) recommended expansion of the freeway to 10 lanes from Austin Hwy. to Ingram.  There initially was some discussion on double-decking the lanes, but that was eventually dropped.

TxDOT had a website called "410forSA.org" that had details on the Loop 410 projects, but that site disappeared inexplicably in mid 2004.
