November 2nd, 2007
I recently sent the following
letter to the editor of the San Antonio Express-News. I also sent
a slightly different version to State Senator Leticia Van De Putte.
I recently got a notice to
renew my vehicle registration and noticed the insert about
"Specialty License Plates". Scanning all the offerings, I noticed a
whole section of plates for Texas' professional sports teams.
Shockingly, there was no San Antonio Spurs plate! Every Houston and
Dallas team was there (including those irreverent
Mavericks), but not the four-time reigning NBA champions! Besides
being complete idiocy, this is an outright insult to San Antonio,
the Spurs, and Spurs fans!
According to TxDOT's website,
both TxDOT and the Legislature can introduce new plates. So I'm
calling on all Spurs fans to write your state legislators to correct
this egregious omission and get a San Antonio Spurs plate
introduced! And, if anyone from the Spurs organization is reading
this, you should be throwing your considerable weight behind this
idea as well, and not just for the sake of generating team spirit.
According to TxDOT, $22 from every professional sports team plate's
annual fee goes for the "maintenance,
renovation or operation of the team's home facilities". What a great
way to raise the funds to keep the AT&T Center state-of-the-art
without having to resort to taxes!
So come on Spurs fans! Let's
make sure a Spurs plate is available for us to celebrate
championship #5 next year!
Happily, I received this response from Ms. Van De Putte:
Mr Purcell,
Thank you for your e-mail to Senator Van de Putte regarding
specialty license plates for the reigning NBA champs. I am her aide
and she asked me to convey this response on her behalf.
It does not seem fair that we
have to wait a little bit longer for specialty plates. But the
people at the Texas Department of Transportation and the San Antonio
Spurs are working together to develop a specialty license plate fit
for our Spurs. They are hoping to have a great license plate
designed and ready for the public in early to mid
2008.
It is a matter of expressing
our pride and gratitude to the team that brings our city such great
moments in basketball. I understand, and I appreciate you bringing
this issue to my attention. Thank you for your support and if you
have further questions please don't hesitate to contact me or my
staff.
Warm regards,
Leticia Van de Putte, R.Ph.
