Texas Highwayman Pages > San Antonio Freeway System

The San Antonio metropolitan area
is fortunate to have one of the most comprehensive urban freeway systems
in North America. In fact, Bexar County has the second largest
system of state highways in the nation. There are currently 993
centerline miles and 3,107 lane miles of state-maintained highway in
Bexar County. About 210 centerline miles and 1,100 lane miles of this total are
controlled-access freeways. A study a few years ago ranked these
highways as the best-maintained among the largest US urban areas.
This site covers the San Antonio freeway system in-depth. Below, you'll
find links to general information about the local freeways and their
history and pages with in-depth details about each freeway. There's also
information on some other area highways, details and history of major
interchange projects, a construction report, TransGuide information, and
photos.

from the simulation videos for each project showing the
location of toll and non-toll lanes and additional features at key
locations.
Bandera Rd./Loop 410 construction
With construction on Bandera Rd. at Loop 410 now
producing the elevated structures along Bandera, I've gotten
quite a few inquiries and hits lately related to this project. See
the Bandera/Loop 410 interchange page
for details.
I-10
coverage extended
For the first time in
the history of this site, I have extended the coverage area for a
freeway corridor. Specifically, I extended coverage for I-10
West from Camp Bullis Rd. to Ralph Fair Rd. to reflect the
increasing development of that area.
The freeways
Below you can access detailed
information about each freeway, including a description of the route and the length
covered, lane and access road configuration, guide sign control cities,
a description of the general traffic conditions and traffic counts, a
complete list of exits in each direction, speed limits, special
features, current construction, future plans, and as much history as I
know about the route.
