Below are several charts and maps
tabulating Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) counts on San Antonio's freeways. The comments,
rankings and calculations are my own analysis based on raw data
from the TxDOT 2006 San Antonio District traffic count map (the latest
currently available.)
To see the previous year's
traffic stats, click here.
The stats below are
area-wide. To see traffic counts along a specific corridor, see
that freeway's individual page.
Summary
This was a record-setting
year for traffic. For the first time since 2000, San Antonio had a
location that recorded in excess of 200,000 vehicles per day (vpd).
In fact, there were three locations that exceeded that threshold, which
is a record. (The previous record was two locations in 1999.)
Also, the top location, I-10 at Callaghan, saw 216,000 vpd, which is
also a new record. (The previous record was 209,000 vpd in 1999 at
Loop 410 and McCullough.) The other spots exceeding 200,000 vpd
were I-35 at Thousand Oaks (214,000) and I-10 at DeZavala (209,000).
All but two of the top 20 spots were north of downtown.
As for one year growth, the
top spot this year was US 90 West just west of Loop 1604, with an
increase of more than 96% over the previous year. This is likely
due to the rapid growth along Potranco Rd. and in the Castroville area
that began in 2005. The I-10 East corridor saw the most growth
overall, with counts increasing by an average of 21%. The I-35 North and US 281 North corridors also saw solid growth.
Previously, I had also
reported
overall growth since 1990. This year, I've shortened that window
to show the cumulative growth over the last decade. In that
category, six of the top 10 spots-- including the top five spots-- were
along Loop 1604. The top four spots were all between I-10
West and Braun Rd. Other corridors with impressive growth since
1996 were SH 151, I-10 West, and I-37.
