Below are several charts and maps tabulating traffic counts (Annual Average Daily Traffic, AADT) for San Antonio's freeways.  The comments, rankings and other calculations are my own analysis based on raw data from the TxDOT 2004 San Antonio District traffic count map.

Summary

Another year, another surprise.  After many years of stability, the title of the busiest spot on San Antonio's freeways has been a moving target during the past few years.  2004's top spot is shared among two locations that have never held the title: I-10 West at DeZavala, and I-35 just north of Loop 410 North, each with an average daily traffic count in 2004 of 190,000 vehicles.  2003's top spot, I-10 at Callaghan, slipped to third place in 2004.  The former long-term champion, Loop 410 at McCullough, continued its decline in 2004, slipping from seventh to 13th place.  This precipitous drop is likely due to continuing construction in that area.  The biggest jump in rankings was Loop 410 at Evers, climbing from 12th to fifth, likely due to the completion of construction just east of there.

The top 20 one-year growth locations in 2004 were scattered over most of the city.  However, there were none in the southeast quadrant, the location of eight of the top 20 locations for growth from 2002 to 2003.

The top locations for growth since 1990 continue to be along and immediately adjacent to the northern arc Loop 1604, especially the northwest side near Bandera Rd.
