Description
This is the main freeway serving
San Antonio's Westside. It provides access to Port San
Antonio (former Kelly AFB and KellyUSA), Lackland AFB, Wilford Hall Medical Center, Our Lady of the Lake
University, St. Mary's University, the San Antonio Produce Market, and
Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium. Residential areas abut the freeway
along most of the corridor between I-35 and SH 151. Near 151 are
several large manufacturing plants and the ballpark. The freeway
runs through undeveloped area between Leon Creek and Old Highway 90.
An older commercial area lines the access roads between there and Loop
410. Outside of Loop 410, most of the frontage is currently
undeveloped.

Construction
projects
At
Old Hwy. 90: The Old Highway 90 overpass will be demolished and replaced
with a new one. This is needed because the old overpass was too low.
The access roads will also be realigned through the area and the old VIA Park &
Ride removed.

Future plans
Kelly AFB is closed in mid-2001 and
the city has converted the former aircraft maintenance depot into a
major civilian industrial complex (Port San Antonio). Interchange improvements to US
90 at SW 36th were made in conjunction with the conversion.
Additional interchange improvements at Military and General Hudnell have
been proposed. A new parkway (Kelly
Parkway) connecting US 90 to I-35 South via Spur 371 (Gen. Hudnell)
is also planned, as are multi-level interchanges on US 90 at Loop 410
and Loop 1604. There is also an item in the MPO's 25-year plan to
extend the freeway as far west as SH 211 and expand it to six lanes
between there and Loop 410.
History
Authorized by Minute Order 18793
(November 24, 1941). Named for Cleto Rodriguez of San Antonio, the
first Hispanic to be awarded the Medal of Honor. The route was
originally named the "West Expressway."
This freeway was built in the mid
'60s to replace the old US 90 through San Antonio's Westside. The
section from I-35 to Cupples was complete by 1967 and remainder of the
route to Loop 410 was complete by the following year. An
interchange for SH 151 was built around 1988. With the addition of
SH 151, a project to widen US 90 from six to 10 lanes between I-35 and
SH 151 was undertaken and completed in 1991. A continuous access
road was added to the EB side near Leon Creek in 1996. TransGuide
coverage was added to the section from I-35 to Zarzamora in 1995 and
along the remainder of the route in June 2001.
